1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1981 Cutlass.

The 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass is characterized by a minimal reliability footprint of only eight owner complaints and two recalls, with issues primarily concentrated in the engine and engine cooling areas. This represents a significantly more stable era than the 1997-1999 period, where complaints reached a high of 174 in 1998 and a low of 92 in 1999. This disparity positions the 1981 model as a far more reliable entry in the vehicle's broader documented history.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass does not appear in the supplied year-by-year federal record, which covers only 19971999, so no direct before-and-after or generational comparison for the target model year can be constructed from this dataset. The 1981-specific data show four tied top complaint areas—Engine & Engine Cooling, Fuel System, Gasoline, Visibility, and Structure—each with just 2 reports, alongside 0 crash complaints and 1 fire complaint, though the data does not specify any root cause. The 1997–1999 trend shows complaints rising from 166 in 1997 to 174 in 1998, then falling sharply to 92 in 1999, with recalls and investigations also tapering off, but this arc describes later reporting years and cannot be mapped onto the 1981 model year. With low complaint volume and no crash complaints in the 1981 record, the federal profile looks comparatively quiet, yet the small sample size and single fire report offer limited predictive confidence. Concrete takeaway: based solely on these federal figures, the 1981 Cutlass is not a highlighted problem year, but the thin record and one fire complaint mean a thorough pre-purchase inspection is prudent before buying.
