What the terms mean

Service interval — the mileage or time at which the factory calls for a task — e.g. an oil change every 7,500 miles.

Condition-based service — BMW, Mini and others replace fixed intervals with an onboard indicator that signals a task from how the car is actually driven.

Severe service — a shortened schedule for towing, frequent short trips, extreme temperatures or dusty roads.

Normal service — the baseline schedule for typical driving — used unless the severe-service conditions apply.
