1997 Volkswagen Eurovan (7DH)

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1997 Eurovan (7DH).

Transmission Automatic 4-spd

The 1997 Volkswagen Eurovan, built on the 7DH platform, pairs a 4-speed automatic transmission with EPA-rated fuel economy of 13 city / 17 highway / 14 combined mpg, while its 5.8-quart oil capacity accommodates a wide viscosity range from 5W-50 through 10W-60 API grades. Its reliability record is a relatively contained 21 owner complaints, with the electrical system standing out as the top trouble area and a single recall on file. That footprint gives the 1997 a recognizable position in the Eurovan's reliability history: a model year whose overall complaint volume is modest, but whose concentration of electrical issues is the clearest signal a researcher or prospective buyer should weigh first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

Owner complaints about the 1997 Volkswagen Eurovan (7DH) top in one area — the electrical system, 3 of 21 reports (14%), well ahead of the next concern. None of this vehicle's 1 recall campaigns target the electrical system, so those reports read as owner-reported wear-and-tear rather than an acknowledged defect. 0 of the reports describe a crash and 1 a fire — a small share of the total, but worth weighing against the electrical system pattern above. These are tallies of what owners actually reported to the federal government, not an editorial score — and higher-selling models naturally rack up more reports.
