U0418 indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has received data from the Brake System Control Module (BSCM) that is out of spec or unreadable. This communication error prevents the PCM from reliably using brake‑related information for vehicle control and emissions functions.
A malfunction within the BSCM itself—such as internal circuitry failure or corrupted firmware—can send invalid data to the PCM.
Loose pins, broken wires, or corrosion in the CAN‑high/low lines can corrupt the signal and cause the PCM to flag invalid data.
Insufficient voltage or a bad ground reference can cause the BSCM to transmit erratic data frames.
Bent pins, missing clips, or foreign material in the connector can interrupt communication.
Only after ruling out the BSCM and wiring should a malfunction in the PCM’s CAN interface be considered.
In most cases the PCM is not the problem. Replacing the PCM without first verifying the BSCM, wiring, and connectors is usually unnecessary and unlikely to resolve the code.
A fuse that supplies power to the BSCM can cause loss of communication, but the code specifically indicates invalid data, not a total loss. Check the fuse, but also inspect the wiring and module.
Clearing the code may temporarily turn off the warning light, but if the underlying communication issue remains, the code will return on the next drive cycle.
The vehicle will usually operate in a reduced‑function mode (e.g., ABS disabled). Driving is possible but not recommended, especially in conditions that require full braking assistance.
