5. CAN bus circuit fault affecting BECM communication

Shorts, opens, or excessive resistance in the high-speed communication lines between the BECM and the network can distort the data frames before they reach the receiving module.

6. PCM/ECM internal CAN controller fault

This is very unlikely; the receiving module rarely misinterprets valid data, so the PCM should only be considered after the BECM, wiring, and power supply have been thoroughly verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all DTCs and freeze frame data from every module, then perform a visual inspection of the BECM harness and connectors for moisture, corrosion, or pin damage.
  2. Test the BECM dedicated power and ground circuits with a digital multimeter to confirm specified voltage and clean continuity under load.
  3. Check the integrity of the CAN bus lines at the BECM using a multimeter or oscilloscope to verify correct voltage levels, proper waveform, and expected termination resistance.
  4. Monitor BECM live data with a scan tool to identify implausible battery parameters or intermittent communication dropouts that correspond with the fault.
  5. Verify the health and state of charge of the 12-volt auxiliary battery and confirm the charging system is maintaining stable system voltage.
  6. If all wiring and power are confirmed good and the BECM continues to transmit invalid data, evaluate the BECM for an internal fault; suspect the PCM only if multiple modules confirm valid data and the PCM alone logs the error.
