U0021 — Low Speed Can Communication Bus Open

Generic OBD-II · all makesNetwork / communication

U0021 means the low-speed Controller Area Network (CAN) bus has an open circuit somewhere in its wiring or connections, preventing one or more control modules from communicating reliably. Low-speed CAN usually handles body and convenience systems, so this code points to a network integrity problem rather than a single sensor failure.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Open or damaged low-speed CAN bus wiring

A break, chafe, pinched wire, corroded splice, or poor pin connection in the CAN-H or CAN-L lines is the most common reason the bus reads as open.

2. Faulty control module on the low-speed bus

A module connected to the low-speed network can fail internally and pull the bus down or create an open, preventing other modules from communicating.

3. Corroded or loose connector

Water intrusion, terminal spread, or oxidation at a module connector or splice pack can interrupt the CAN signal and set this code.

4. Incorrect or missing network termination

If the low-speed bus relies on specific termination and it is disconnected or damaged, the network may report an open bus condition.

5. Power or ground issue to a bus module

A module that loses proper power or ground may appear to create a communication open, even though the CAN wires are intact.

6. PCM/ECM internal network driver failure

This is uncommon; the engine computer is usually not the cause of a low-speed CAN open, and should only be suspected after wiring and all other modules are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm U0021 and identify which modules communicate and which do not, then compare with the vehicle's network topology
  2. Visually inspect the low-speed CAN wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, chafing, water intrusion, and terminal tension
  3. Measure CAN-H and CAN-L voltages and resistance at an accessible module or diagnostic connector, following manufacturer specifications
  4. Disconnect modules on the low-speed bus one at a time while monitoring communication to find a module that restores the network when removed
  5. Repair the wiring, clean or reconnect terminals, or replace the module that caused the open, then clear codes and verify all modules communicate

Frequently asked

Can I keep driving with a U0021 code?

Usually yes if the engine runs normally, but body and convenience functions may be unreliable. It should be diagnosed to avoid losing features you rely on.

Will I need a new PCM or ECM for U0021?

Almost never. U0021 is a network wiring or module communication issue, and replacing the engine computer is usually the wrong repair.

Why does my scan tool show so many other codes along with U0021?

When the CAN bus is open, several modules may set communication or lost-communication codes. Many of those secondary codes often clear once the bus is repaired.

Is this a serious safety problem?

It usually does not stop the engine or transmission from working, but it can disable safety or convenience features. The severity depends on which systems are on the affected bus.
