P2581 means the powertrain control module has detected a higher-than-expected voltage signal from the turbocharger or supercharger speed sensor circuit. The sensor monitors compressor-wheel speed so the PCM can regulate boost and protect the engine. A 'circuit high' reading usually points to an electrical fault such as a short to voltage, poor ground, or a failed sensor.

1. Faulty turbocharger/supercharger speed sensor

The sensor can fail internally, causing the signal circuit to remain at a high voltage or produce an out-of-range reading that the PCM interprets as a circuit-high condition.

2. Signal wire shorted to voltage

The sensor signal wire may be shorted to a higher-voltage source, such as the 5-volt reference or battery voltage, due to chafing, pinching, or damaged insulation in the harness.

3. Connector or wiring harness damage

Corroded, bent, loose, or oil-contaminated terminals in the sensor connector, or harness damage near the turbocharger, can create high resistance or an open that pulls the circuit high.

4. Reference voltage or ground circuit fault

An open, high-resistance ground path, or an excessive reference voltage supply, can raise the sensor output above the expected range and set the code.

5. PCM/ECM internal fault

Rarely, the control module may misread a good sensor signal due to an internal fault; this should only be considered after the sensor and all wiring have been verified.

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and check for related turbocharger, supercharger, or boost-control codes.
  2. Inspect the sensor, connector, and harness for visible damage, corrosion, oil contamination, or chafing near heat sources.
  3. Test sensor supply voltage, ground integrity, and signal voltage with a multimeter or oscilloscope; compare readings to manufacturer specifications.
  4. Check the sensor signal wire for continuity and for shorts to voltage or ground.
  5. If the wiring tests good, test or substitute the turbocharger/supercharger speed sensor.
  6. Only after the sensor and wiring are ruled out, consider PCM/ECM input testing or reprogramming.
