P2536 means the powertrain or body control module has detected an abnormal voltage, resistance, or state in the ignition switch accessory (ACC) position circuit. This circuit signals when the key is in the accessory position, and the code sets when the module sees a value outside its expected range.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty ignition switch

Internal electrical failure or contact wear inside the ignition switch prevents the accessory position circuit from producing the correct signal voltage or resistance.

2. Open or shorted circuit wiring

The wire running between the ignition switch and the monitoring module may be broken, chafed, or shorted to ground or another circuit.

3. Corroded or loose electrical connectors

Poor pin contact or corrosion at the ignition switch pigtail or control module connector introduces excessive resistance or intermittent signal loss.

4. Aftermarket accessory circuit interference

Non-factory devices improperly tapped into the accessory circuit can alter circuit voltage or resistance and trigger a rationality fault.

5. Faulty control module

In rare cases the PCM or BCM may misinterpret a valid signal due to an internal input failure; this should only be considered after the switch and wiring are proven good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for stored codes and review freeze frame data to confirm P2536 and identify any co-existing ignition circuit faults.
  2. Visually inspect the ignition switch harness connector and wiring for corrosion, backed-out pins, or insulation damage.
  3. With the key in the ACC position, measure voltage and/or resistance on the accessory position circuit and compare to manufacturer specifications.
  4. Perform continuity and short-to-ground tests on the wiring between the ignition switch and the monitoring module.
  5. If all switch and harness tests pass, verify the control module is receiving the correct input; condemn the module only if it fails verified pinout tests.
