P1131 means the upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 is reporting a lean air/fuel mixture and is not switching between rich and lean as expected. The code usually points to either a lazy or failed oxygen sensor, or a real lean condition that keeps the sensor pinned lean.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty upstream oxygen sensor

The oxygen sensor can become contaminated or worn with age, slowing or stopping its switching response and causing it to indicate lean. This is the single most common root cause for P1131.

2. Vacuum or intake air leak

Unmetered air entering the intake after the mass airflow sensor, or a vacuum leak, creates a persistent lean condition that the oxygen sensor correctly reports.

3. Exhaust leak upstream of the oxygen sensor

A leak in the exhaust manifold, flex pipe, or nearby gasket allows outside air to be drawn into the exhaust stream, causing the oxygen sensor to read falsely lean.

4. Low fuel pressure or weak fuel delivery

Insufficient fuel pressure from a weak pump, restricted filter, or faulty regulator can produce a genuine lean mixture that the sensor detects.

5. Mass airflow sensor inaccuracy

A dirty or failing mass airflow sensor can under-report incoming air, leading the engine controller to deliver too little fuel and resulting in a lean mixture.

6. Engine control module fault

PCM/ECM failure causing P1131 is extremely rare and should only be considered after the oxygen sensor, wiring, leaks, and fuel system have been thoroughly tested and ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm P1131 and review freeze-frame data, noting engine load, temperature, and RPM when the code set.
  2. Visually inspect and listen for vacuum leaks, cracked hoses, and intake gasket leaks; perform a smoke test if needed.
  3. Inspect the exhaust manifold, downpipe, and gaskets upstream of the oxygen sensor for leaks.
  4. Monitor live upstream oxygen sensor data to verify switching activity, response time, and voltage range.
  5. Measure fuel pressure at idle and under load, comparing against specification.
  6. If the sensor fails switching tests and other causes are ruled out, replace the upstream bank 1 oxygen sensor.
