P0737 is set when the Transmission Control Module (TCM) detects a malfunction in the engine speed output circuit. This circuit carries the engine RPM signal that the TCM sends to the powertrain control module (PCM) and/or other modules, and a problem with that output triggers the code. The fault usually points to wiring or signal-path issues rather than the transmission itself.

1. Damaged wiring, chafed insulation, or corroded pins in the engine speed output circuit

The TCM-to-PCM engine speed wire is often exposed to heat, vibration, and connector contamination; open or shorted conductors here are the single most common cause of P0737.

2. Loose, bent, or contaminated TCM/PCM connector

Backed-out terminals, water intrusion, or green-corrosion on the engine speed output pin can interrupt the signal without any component failure.

3. Failed engine speed sensor (CKP) feeding the TCM

If the TCM cannot produce a valid engine speed output because the input signal is missing or erratic, the underlying sensor or its reluctor should be checked.

4. Faulty TCM internal output driver or power/ground issue

An internal TCM failure or low supply voltage/poor ground at the TCM can prevent the output circuit from operating within specification.

5. PCM input or processing fault on the receiving end

A damaged input stage in the PCM can mimic a TCM output fault; this is uncommon but should be considered only after the wiring and TCM output have been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan all modules (TCM, PCM, ABS, instrument cluster) for related codes and freeze-frame data to confirm where the signal is being lost.
  2. Visually inspect the engine speed output circuit harness and connectors between the TCM and PCM for chafing, pin damage, corrosion, water ingress, and proper terminal tension.
  3. Verify clean, stable battery voltage and good grounds at the TCM before testing signals.
  4. Backprobe the engine speed output circuit with a lab scope or graphing multimeter while the engine is running to confirm a clean, consistent waveform; compare to manufacturer specification.
  5. If the output is missing or distorted, command the TCM output (if supported) and trace the signal to the receiving module to localize the open or short.
  6. Only after the harness, connectors, power, ground, and TCM output have all been verified should the TCM itself be condemned, and the PCM should be replaced only as a last resort.
