P0732 — Gear 2 Incorrect Ratio

P0732 means the powertrain control module has detected that the transmission’s actual gear ratio in 2nd gear does not match the expected ratio. The code is usually set when the input and output shaft speeds differ more than allowed, indicating slippage or failure to achieve 2nd gear. It points most often to hydraulic or mechanical problems inside the transmission rather than an electronic fault.

1. Low, degraded, or incorrect transmission fluid

Insufficient or burnt fluid reduces hydraulic pressure and clutch holding capacity, which is the most common trigger for incorrect ratio codes including P0732.

2. Worn or failed 2nd gear clutch pack or friction plates

5. Internal mechanical damage

Broken snap rings, damaged planetary gearset, worn bands, or failed one-way clutches can prevent the transmission from achieving the correct 2nd gear ratio.

Control module failure causing P0732 is uncommon; it should only be considered after fluid, mechanical, and sensor causes have been ruled out.

  3. Inspect and test the input shaft speed sensor, output shaft speed sensor, and their wiring for correct resistance, voltage, and signal output.
  4. Perform a transmission line pressure test and actuate shift solenoids to verify hydraulic operation and clutch application.
