This sensor monitors hydraulic pressure in the power steering system to help the PCM adjust engine idle speed during high-load maneuvers. How it's diagnosed

  1. Use a scan tool to verify the P0553 code and check for any additional codes. Clear the codes and see if P0553 returns immediately.
  2. Visually inspect the power steering pressure sensor/switch and its connector for damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Repair or replace as needed.
  3. Test the sensor/switch according to manufacturer specifications using a multimeter. Check resistance or voltage output with the engine off and while turning the steering wheel.
  4. Inspect the wiring harness between the sensor and PCM for shorts to voltage, opens, or high resistance. Pay close attention to areas where the harness may rub against metal components.
  5. If all wiring and the sensor test good, perform a PCM self-test or monitor the sensor signal with a scan tool while wiggling the harness to check for intermittent faults. Only after exhaustive testing should the PCM be suspected.
