P0419 is a generic OBD-II code indicating an electrical fault in the 'B' control circuit of the secondary air injection system, which briefly pumps fresh air into the exhaust stream after a cold start to speed up catalyst light-off and reduce hydrocarbon emissions. The powertrain control module (PCM) sets the code when it detects an open, short, or otherwise out-of-range voltage in that control circuit, which typically drives the air pump relay or a control valve on the second bank.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty air pump relay

The most common cause of a circuit-level code like P0419. The relay's contacts burn out or stick, so the PCM never sees the expected load or voltage on the control line.

2. Damaged wiring or corroded connector in the control circuit

Heat, vibration, and under-hood exposure commonly crack insulation, break strands, or corrode the air pump and valve connectors, producing an open or high-resistance condition the PCM flags as a circuit fault.

3. Failed secondary air injection pump motor

Brush wear, internal shorts, or a seized motor changes the current draw on the control circuit, which the PCM can interpret as a circuit malfunction.

4. Stuck or shorted combination (diverter) valve / control solenoid

The electrically operated valve that routes pump air can fail open, shorted, or with a broken coil, triggering a circuit code on the B side of the system.

5. Blown fuse or poor ground in the air injection circuit

A blown fuse or a corroded engine/body ground removes power from the circuit. Simple to check and often overlooked when chasing the code.

6. Fault in the powertrain control module (PCM)

Genuine PCM failures are uncommon for P0419. The driver-side output transistor or internal driver for the air pump relay can fail, but this should only be considered after every other component in the circuit has been tested and found good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for all stored and pending codes and review freeze frame data to confirm when the fault sets (typically within the first minute after a cold start).
  2. Perform a visual and physical inspection of the air pump harness, connectors, and routing; look for chafed insulation, broken wires, heat damage, and green/corroded pins.
  3. Check the air injection system fuse(s) and the integrity of the pump and PCM grounds with a multimeter.
  4. Test the air pump relay by measuring coil resistance and contact resistance, or swap it with an identical known-good relay; command the relay on with a scan tool and listen for the pump.
  5. With the system commanded on, backprobe the pump connector for battery voltage and a good ground, and measure the voltage drop across the relay contacts under load.
  6. Test the air pump motor's current draw and the combination/divverter valve solenoid resistance against specification; only after all of the above pass should the PCM driver or PCM itself be suspected.

Is it safe to keep driving with P0419?

Yes, in most cases. The secondary air injection system only operates for a short time after a cold start, so once the engine is warm the vehicle typically runs normally. The main consequences are an illuminated Check Engine Light and likely failure of an emissions or state inspection.

Does P0419 mean I need a new engine computer?

No. Despite what some online sources or parts sellers suggest, the PCM is one of the least common causes of P0419. The vast majority of these codes are traced to the air pump relay, the wiring and connectors, the pump motor, or the combination valve. Replacing or reprogramming the PCM before fully testing the rest of the circuit is expensive and usually does not resolve the code.

Can I just clear the code and drive?

Clearing the code does not repair the underlying electrical fault, and the light will typically return within one or two cold-start cycles. A vehicle with the code active will not pass an emissions inspection in jurisdictions that require it.

Why does the system exist if I barely notice it?

It is an emissions-only system. During the first minute or two after a cold start, the catalytic converter is not yet hot enough to clean the exhaust efficiently, so the pump injects fresh air into the exhaust to burn extra hydrocarbons and help the catalyst reach operating temperature sooner. It is not required for normal engine performance.
