P0410 is set when the powertrain control module (PCM) detects that the secondary air injection (AIR) system, which injects fresh air into the exhaust stream during cold start to reduce emissions, is not operating within the expected parameters. The code indicates that the system either failed to activate, failed to achieve the proper flow, or turned off unexpectedly. In most vehicles this system consists of an electric or belt‑driven pump, a check valve, and associated hoses and relays.

1. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump failure

The pump may be mechanically seized, have worn bearings, or have internal electrical faults that prevent air flow.

2. AIR pump relay or fuse malfunction

3. Air injection hose leak or blockage

Cracked, disconnected, or clogged hoses can allow air to escape or restrict flow, leading to insufficient system performance.

4. AIR control valve (solenoid or check valve) failure

If the valve that routes air to the exhaust sticks open or closed, the system will not achieve the correct pressure or flow, triggering the code.

5. Vacuum leak in the AIR system lines

Unintended air leaks in the vacuum lines feeding the valve can cause incorrect metering of air and set P0410.

6. PCM software issue (rare)

In very few cases the PCM itself may have a software calibration error or internal fault that prevents proper control of the AIR system, but this is an uncommon cause.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Perform a visual inspection of all AIR system components – pump, hoses, valve, and electrical connectors – for obvious damage or disconnected parts.
  2. Check the AIR pump fuse and relay; verify that voltage is present at the relay when the system is commanded on.
  3. Operate the AIR pump (using a scan‑tool command or a jumper) and listen for proper operation; measure the pump’s current draw if possible.
  4. Test the AIR control solenoid/valve for proper actuation and inspect for vacuum leaks at the valve.
  5. Use a scan tool to monitor the AIR system status data (e.g., commanded vs. actual pressure/flow) and confirm that the PCM receives appropriate feedback.
  6. Perform a smoke or leak‑down test on the air‑injection hoses and connections to locate hidden leaks.
