P0209 — Cylinder 9 Injector Circuit

P0209 indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an electrical fault in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 9. The fault can be an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or resistance/current values outside the expected range for that injector driver.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed fuel injector (open or shorted solenoid coil)

The injector itself is the single most common cause. Internal coil windings can fail open or short, pushing the circuit's electrical readings outside the PCM's expected window.

2. Damaged or chafed wiring in the injector harness

Heat, vibration, and age can crack insulation or break conductor strands between the injector and the PCM, producing intermittent or hard faults.

3. Corroded, loose, or backed-out electrical connector at the injector

The two-pin injector plug is exposed to fuel, oil, and heat. Corroded terminals or a partially seated connector frequently trigger circuit codes without an actual injector failure.

4. Poor power supply or ground to the injector circuit

A weak shared feed (often through an injector relay or fuse link) or a compromised engine ground can make a good injector read as faulty.

5. Open or short inside the injector driver within the PCM

Less common, but a thermal failure or internal transistor breakdown in the PCM's injector output stage can set this code. Confirmed only after the wiring and injector have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code and review freeze-frame data; check whether related misfire or fuel trim codes are also present.
  2. Visually inspect the cylinder 9 injector connector, harness routing, and any signs of chafing, melting, or oil contamination.
  3. Measure the injector coil resistance with a multimeter and compare it to the manufacturer specification and to the other injectors on the engine.
  4. With the connector disconnected and the key on, check for proper driver voltage or controlled ground at the PCM-side terminals using a wiring diagram.
  5. Swap the suspect injector with a known-good adjacent cylinder, clear codes, and re-run: if the code moves, the injector is bad; if it stays on cylinder 9, the fault is in the wiring or PCM.
  6. If wiring and injector test good, back-probe the PCM connector for the injector driver signal and rule out an internal PCM failure last.

Is it safe to keep driving with P0209?

Short trips are usually possible, but the affected cylinder will be running unburned fuel into the exhaust, which can overheat the catalytic converter and cause wash-down of cylinder 9's oil film. Diagnose and repair promptly.

Will replacing the PCM fix this code?

Almost never. In the vast majority of cases the fault is the injector, its connector, or the harness. The PCM's injector driver is a rare failure and should only be considered after the injector, wiring, connectors, and power/ground have all been verified.

Can low or contaminated fuel cause P0209?

Poor fuel quality can clog an injector and change its spray pattern, but a true P0209 is an electrical circuit fault, not a flow problem. Fuel contamination usually sets lean, misfire, or performance codes rather than an injector circuit code.

Why is cylinder 9 specifically called out?

The code is cylinder-specific: the PCM monitors each injector circuit independently and reports the cylinder whose electrical readings fall outside the expected range. Cylinder 9 only applies to engines that actually have a ninth cylinder, typically V10, V12, or certain flat/inline configurations.
