P0200 — Injector Circuitopen

Generic OBD-II · all makesPowertrain (engine & transmission)

P0200 indicates that the engine control module (ECM) has detected an open circuit in one or more fuel injector circuits. This means the electrical path to the injector is broken, preventing the injector from opening and delivering fuel.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty fuel injector

The injector itself may have an internal open circuit due to a broken coil winding or internal failure. This is the most common cause.

2. Damaged wiring or connectors

Wires to the injector may be broken, chafed, or corroded, or the connector may be loose or have bent pins, causing an open circuit.

3. Failed injector driver circuit in ECM

Although rare, the ECM's internal injector driver can fail, resulting in an open circuit. This is typically a last-resort diagnosis after all other possibilities are ruled out.

4. Blown fuse or faulty relay

A blown fuse or defective relay that supplies power to the injector circuit can cause an open circuit condition.

5. Engine control module (ECM) software or hardware issue

In very rare cases, a software glitch or hardware failure within the ECM can incorrectly report an open circuit. This is not a common cause.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for additional codes and freeze frame data to identify which cylinder(s) are affected.
  2. Visually inspect the injector connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  3. Use a multimeter to check for battery voltage at the injector connector with the key on (engine off).
  4. Measure the resistance of the suspect injector; compare to manufacturer specifications (typically 10-18 ohms). An open circuit will show infinite resistance.
  5. Perform a continuity test on the wiring between the injector connector and the ECM connector.
  6. If all wiring and injector tests pass, consider testing the ECM's injector driver circuit using a noid light or oscilloscope, or consult a professional for ECM diagnosis.

Frequently asked

Can a bad fuel injector cause P0200?

Yes, a faulty injector with an internal open circuit is the most common cause of P0200. Replacing the injector usually fixes the problem.

Do I need to replace the ECM for P0200?

Almost never. The ECM is rarely the cause of P0200. Most cases are due to a bad injector, wiring issue, or connector problem. Only consider ECM replacement after thoroughly testing all other components.

Can I drive with a P0200 code?

It is not recommended. The affected cylinder is not receiving fuel, which can cause misfiring, catalytic converter damage, and poor drivability. Have the issue diagnosed and repaired promptly.

Will clearing the code fix P0200?

Clearing the code will only turn off the Check Engine Light temporarily. If the underlying open circuit is not repaired, the code will return as soon as the condition is detected again.
