P0030 — Ho2S Heater Control Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1

Generic OBD-II · all makesPowertrain (engine & transmission)

This code indicates a malfunction in the electrical circuit controlling the heating element of the upstream oxygen sensor on engine bank 1. This heater brings the sensor to operating temperature quickly for accurate fuel mixture monitoring. When the circuit fails, the sensor may not function correctly during cold starts.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed oxygen sensor heater element

The internal heating coil inside the sensor often burns out over time due to heat cycles. This is the most frequent cause of P0030.

2. Damaged or corroded sensor wiring harness

Wires near the exhaust manifold can melt or break from heat and vibration. This interrupts power to the heater circuit.

3. Poor electrical connection at sensor plug

Moisture or corrosion can enter the connector, increasing resistance. This prevents the circuit from completing properly.

4. Blown fuse in heater power circuit

A short in the wiring may cause the protective fuse to blow. This cuts all power to the heater element.

5. Faulty power relay for sensor heater

Some vehicles use a relay to supply voltage to the heater circuit. If the relay contacts fail, the circuit will not energize.

6. Internal PCM driver circuit failure

The control module internal switch for this circuit may fail, but this is rare. This should only be considered after all external components are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Perform visual inspection of sensor wiring and connector for heat damage or corrosion
  2. Verify integrity of relevant fuses and relays using a multimeter
  3. Measure heater element resistance at the sensor pins to check for open circuit
  4. Test for power and ground at the harness connector with the ignition on
  5. Check wiring continuity between sensor connector and control module pins
  6. Clear code and operate vehicle to confirm repair and monitor readiness

Frequently asked

Is it safe to drive with this code?

Yes, though fuel economy may decrease and the vehicle will not pass emissions testing.

Does this code mean the engine computer is bad?

No, PCM failure is extremely rare for this code; focus on the sensor and wiring first.

Can the oxygen sensor be cleaned instead of replaced?

No, internal heater element failures require complete sensor replacement.

Will this code clear itself?

Unlikely, as the circuit fault usually persists until the component is repaired.
