P0029 — Exhaust Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Rangeperformance Bank 2

Generic OBD-II · all makesPowertrain (engine & transmission)

P0029 indicates that the engine computer has detected the exhaust valve control solenoid circuit on Bank 2 is operating outside its expected electrical range or performance. This typically relates to variable valve lift/timing systems where an exhaust rocker arm oil control solenoid is not responding correctly.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty exhaust valve control solenoid (Bank 2)

The solenoid itself is the most common failure; internal winding resistance drifts or the valve sticks, causing out-of-range circuit feedback.

2. Low or degraded engine oil / wrong viscosity

These systems rely on clean, correct-viscosity oil pressure to actuate. Dirty oil or overdue changes can cause solenoid performance codes without the part being defective.

3. Wiring or connector issue at the solenoid

Corrosion, chafed insulation, loose pins, or an open/high-resistance circuit can make the computer read the solenoid as out of range.

4. Clogged oil passage to the solenoid

Sludge or debris blocking the feed gallery to the Bank 2 exhaust rocker arm solenoid can prevent proper actuation even when electrical function is normal.

5. Failed rocker arm actuator / valve lift mechanism

A mechanically stuck or worn rocker arm actuator on Bank 2 can mimic a solenoid circuit/performance fault.

6. Engine computer (PCM/ECM) fault

Rare; a driver circuit failure inside the PCM could set this code, but this is uncommon and should only be considered after all wiring, solenoid, and oil-supply checks pass.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm the code with a scan tool and check for related Bank 2 VVT/lift codes; record freeze-frame data.
  2. Inspect the Bank 2 exhaust valve control solenoid connector and wiring for corrosion, looseness, or damage.
  3. Verify engine oil level, condition, and viscosity; service the oil if overdue or incorrect.
  4. Test solenoid resistance and command operation with a scan tool or direct actuation per service-spec values.
  5. Check oil pressure and the feed passage to the Bank 2 solenoid for blockage.
  6. Only after solenoid, wiring, oil, and passages are verified, evaluate the PCM as a last-resort cause.

Frequently asked

Can I keep driving with a P0029 code?

Short distances may be okay, but prolonged driving can cause poor performance, increased emissions, and possible catalytic converter damage. Have it diagnosed reasonably soon.

Does P0029 mean I need to replace the PCM?

No. PCM failure is rarely the cause. Shops or sources that immediately recommend a computer replacement for P0029 are usually wrong; the solenoid, oil condition, wiring, or oil passages are far more likely.

Will an oil change fix P0029?

Sometimes. If the oil is old, low, or the wrong viscosity, correcting it can clear the code. If the solenoid or wiring is faulty, an oil change alone will not fix it.

Is Bank 2 the driver's or passenger's side?

It depends on the engine. Bank 2 is the side opposite Bank 1, and Bank 1 is the side containing cylinder #1. Confirm the cylinder layout for your specific engine before replacing anything.
