C0605 — Steering Wheel Angle Sensor Circuitopen

C0605 means the control module that reads the steering wheel angle sensor has detected an open circuit in that sensor's wiring or internal sensor element. An open circuit breaks the expected electrical path, so the module cannot determine steering wheel position reliably. This usually turns on stability/traction control warning lamps and can disable related chassis systems.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed steering wheel angle sensor

The sensor element itself can develop an internal open circuit, especially after years of steering wheel rotation and vibration. This is the most common root cause for an open-circuit code.

2. Open or damaged wiring/connector

A break, pinch, or corrosion in the harness between the sensor and its control module interrupts the circuit. Connector terminals pulled out or fretted can produce the same result.

3. Clockspring failure

If the sensor or its wiring passes through the clockspring, an open inside the clockspring ribbon can trigger C0605. This is particularly likely if other steering-wheel-mounted circuits are also intermittent.

4. Poor ground or power supply fault

A loose ground or missing reference voltage to the sensor can make the module report an open circuit, even if the signal wire is intact.

5. Faulty control module

The module reading the sensor, such as the ABS/ESC or steering-column module, rarely fails. It should be considered only after wiring, the sensor, and the clockspring have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data; note whether other steering-column or stability-control codes are present.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, backed-out terminals, chafing, or obvious opens.
  3. Check sensor power, ground, and signal circuit continuity, and compare resistance to specifications if available.
  4. If the wiring passes through a clockspring, test continuity through the clockspring while slowly turning the steering wheel.
  5. View live steering-angle data while turning the wheel; no change or erratic readings support sensor or wiring failure.
  6. Replace the control module only after confirming wiring integrity and correct sensor operation, then perform required steering-angle calibration.
