C0536 — Motor Control B Circuitopen

Generic OBD-II · all makesChassis

C0536 means the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) has detected an open circuit in the ABS/ESC hydraulic pump motor control circuit B. Because the module cannot reliably drive or verify the pump motor on that path, ABS, traction control, and stability control functions may be disabled and warning lamps illuminated. The fault is in the motor control wiring or components, not a wheel-speed or pressure sensor.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Open or high-resistance wiring/connectors in motor control circuit B

Corroded, damaged, loose, or pushed-back terminals in the harness between the EBCM and the pump motor are the most common reason the module sees an open circuit.

2. Failed ABS hydraulic pump motor

An open motor winding, seized rotor, or worn internal contacts prevents current flow on circuit B and sets the code.

3. Faulty pump motor relay or driver

If the relay or solid-state driver that switches power to the pump motor cannot close the B-side circuit, the EBCM reports an open.

4. Poor power or ground supply

A blown fuse, corroded ground, or low system voltage can keep the pump motor from energizing and mimic an open control-circuit fault.

5. EBCM internal failure

A rare internal driver or monitoring fault in the EBCM can falsely set C0536; it should only be considered after wiring, the motor, and power/ground are proven good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data from the ABS/EBCM system to look for related faults
  2. Inspect the EBCM and pump motor connectors, terminals, and harness for corrosion, damage, pushed-back pins, and proper seating
  3. Check fuses, power feeds, and grounds for the EBCM and pump motor; repair any supply-side issues
  4. Test continuity and resistance on motor control circuit B and energize the pump motor, measuring voltage/current at the motor control terminal
  5. If wiring, power, and the motor test within specification, evaluate the EBCM motor driver/relay function before replacing the module

Frequently asked

Is C0536 usually caused by a bad ABS module?

No. Most C0536 faults are caused by wiring, connector, or pump motor problems. The EBCM itself is a less common cause and should only be suspected after the circuit and motor are verified good.

Can I keep driving with C0536?

Base braking typically remains normal, but ABS, traction control, and stability control may be disabled. Drive cautiously and repair the fault promptly.

Will clearing the code fix the problem?

No. A scanner can clear the code, but it will return until the open in motor control circuit B is repaired.

What does 'Motor Control B Circuit' mean?

It is one of the control or sense paths the EBCM uses to drive and monitor the ABS hydraulic pump motor. 'Open' means that electrical path is interrupted somewhere between the module and the motor.
