Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1992 Metro.
The 1992 Geo Metro is a compact passenger car equipped with a 3-speed automatic transmission, requiring 3.5 quarts of 5W-30 API oil and delivering EPA-estimated fuel economy of 31 mpg city, 35 highway, and 33 combined. This model year accumulated 74 owner complaints, with seat belts as the top issue area, and was subject to a single recall. Within the model’s complaint history spanning 1990 to 2001, where the highest year reached 121 complaints and the lowest just 6, the 1992 Metro occupies a mid-range position, indicating a relatively average reliability standing for the nameplate.

From the factory this vehicle uses OE oil filter 25325406. Note the factory engine oil filter, engine air filter, fuel filter, serpentine belt and thermostat are now discontinued — plan on a superseded or quality aftermarket equivalent, which the part pages below list where known. Each part links to every other vehicle that shares it, so a part you already stock may fit more of your fleet than you'd expect.

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
The 1992 Geo Metro sits near the early peak of a complaint arc that climbed from 43 complaints in 1990 to a high of 121 by 1995 before declining. With 74 complaints, 1 recall, 1 investigation, and 1 TSB in 1992, this model year had the lowest recall, investigation, and TSB counts across the entire 1990–1992 entry period, suggesting fewer factory-recognized defects at the time of production. The 1992 model's 1 investigation contrasts sharply with 4 in 1990 and 3 in 1991, indicating a brief window of reduced federal scrutiny. The primary complaint categories—seat belts (10), suspension (9), and structure (7)—point to foundational durability concerns rather than a single系统性 failure, and 7 crash complaints with zero fire complaints show no atypical safety catastrophe pattern. The data does not specify root causes for these complaint categories. The 1992 model benefits from having the lowest recall and TSB burden of the early-years trio, but it was produced during an upward complaint trajectory that peaked three years later, meaning latent issues may not have fully manifested in owner reports yet. Buy cautiously: this is a defensible year within the generation only if the specific unit has documented suspension and seat belt service records, as those were the top complaint areas. A pre-purchase inspection focusing on those systems is non-negotiable.

MISLOCATED ATTACHING SPOT WELDS OF THE HOOD STRIKER ASSEMBLY CAUSE CRACKS TO START ON THE HOOD INNER PANEL. IF CRACKS OCCUR, THE HOOD STRIKER ASSEMBLY MAY NOT PROPERLY ENGAGE THE HOOD LATCH WHEN THE HOOD IS CLOSED. Remedy: GM DEALERS WILL (A) INSTALL TWO BOLTS AND NUTS TO SECURE THE STRIKER ASSEMBLY TO THE HOOD INNER PANEL, AND (B) ENSURE THAT THE HOOD LATCH ASSEMBLY FASTENERS ARE PROPERLY TIGHTENED.
