Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
The 1997 BMW M3 represents a peak in consumer complaints for its immediate era, recording 27 complaints compared to only 1 in 1996 and 14 in 1998. While the model generation saw zero complaints from 1990 through 1994, the 1997 model year marks the highest volume of complaints between 1990 and 2001. The primary complaint areas for 1997 include visibility, air bags, tires, and engine and engine cooling, though the data does not specify the root causes of these issues. Despite this, the 1997 model had only 2 recalls and 7 TSBs, which is fewer TSBs than both the preceding and succeeding model years. Because it carries the highest complaint volume of its early generation, this is not the ideal year to buy.
