Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1991 535I.
Anchored by the E34 platform, the 1991 BMW 535I pairs an Automatic 4-spd transmission with an engine requiring 6.1 qt of 15W-40 / 10W-40 / 10W-30 API SJ oil to return EPA mileage of 15/20/16 mpg. Within the model's documented history spanning 1990-2017, this specific year recorded only 5 total owner complaints and 3 recalls, with Engine & Engine Cooling identified as the top complaint area. This limited feedback places the 1991 model near the lowest end of the reliability spectrum, sitting just above the 1990 low of 2 complaints and well below the 2011 high of 264.

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
The 1991 BMW 535I sits at a modest but noticeable uptick in federal activity within its generation, with five complaints and three recalls—matching the 1992 figures but tripling the 1990 baseline. This mid-cycle peak suggests early refinement issues rather than a systemic flaw, as later years (1993–1995) show a sharp decline in complaints and recalls. The data doesn’t specify root causes, but the spread of complaints across engine cooling, electrical systems, and powertrain implies no single dominant failure mode. Notably, crash and fire complaints are absent, and technical service bulletins remain stable at three, indicating BMW addressed concerns proactively. While not the quietest year in the record, 1991 avoids the outliers of its predecessors and successors, positioning it as a relatively balanced choice—assuming documented recalls have been remedied. For a used purchase, this year offers a pragmatic balance of transparency and resolved issues.
