Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 2013 Volvo S60 generated 85 federal complaints and 4 recalls, a notable decrease from the 2012 model’s 121 complaints and 8 recalls, yet remaining above the 2014 model’s 25 complaints and 3 recalls as the generation settled after its early spike. Across the 2011–2018 generation, the federal record peaked in 2012 and trended broadly downward through 2018; 2013 sits on the downward slope of that arc, indicating the model was moving past its highest-volume complaint period but had not yet reached the lower plateau established from 2014 onward. Engine-related filings dominate the 2013 record with 28 complaints, while the data notes 5 crash complaints and 1 fire complaint without specifying root causes. Given its halved recall count and declining complaint volume relative to the 2012 peak, the 2013 model year is a defensible used purchase within this generation, though buyers seeking the cleanest federal profile may prefer 2014 or later.
