1997 Volkswagen Eurovan (7DC)

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1997 Eurovan (7DC).

Transmission Automatic 4-spd

The 1997 Volkswagen Eurovan (7DC) sits on the company’s 7DC platform and is powered by a V‑engine that utilizes a 5.8‑quart oil capacity, accepting viscosities such as 5W‑50, 10W‑50 or 10W‑60 and paired with an automatic four‑speed transmission. Its fuel‑economy ratings of 13 mpg city, 17 mpg highway and 14 mpg combined reflect the modest efficiency typical of its class. Reliability data show a relatively low total of 21 owner complaints, with the electrical system identified as the most frequent issue and only a single recall recorded for the model year. Positioned toward the middle of the Eurovan’s production run, the 1997 iteration is generally regarded as a reasonably dependable example, provided its electrical quirks are addressed.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

Owner complaints about the 1997 Volkswagen Eurovan (7DC) top in one area — the electrical system, 3 of 21 reports (14%), well ahead of the next concern. None of this vehicle's 1 recall campaigns target the electrical system, so those reports read as owner-reported wear-and-tear rather than an acknowledged defect. 0 of the reports describe a crash and 1 a fire — a small share of the total, but worth weighing against the electrical system pattern above. These are tallies of what owners actually reported to the federal government, not an editorial score — and higher-selling models naturally rack up more reports.
