U0682 — Lost Communication Throttlepedal Position Sensorswitch E

Generic OBD-II · all makesNetwork / communication

U0682 means the engine computer (PCM) has lost serial-data communication with the redundant "E" channel of the throttle/accelerator pedal position sensor. Because the PCM no longer receives a valid pedal-position message on that channel, it often defaults to a reduced-power or limp-home strategy.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty accelerator pedal position sensor assembly

The pedal sensor contains redundant position channels; internal electronics, solder joints, or the "E" channel communication circuit can fail so the PCM loses contact with that channel even though wiring is intact.

2. Wiring or connector fault between sensor and PCM

Open, shorted, pinched, or chafed wires in the harness between the pedal sensor and the PCM can interrupt the data line or reference voltage for sensor E.

3. Power or ground supply problem to the sensor

A blown fuse, poor ground eyelet, corroded splice, or low reference voltage can prevent the sensor module from waking up and communicating.

4. Corroded or damaged terminals in the sensor connector

Bent, backed-out, oxidized, or moisture-wicked connector pins at the pedal sensor can create an intermittent or permanent loss of communication on the bus.

5. Aftermarket electrical interference or recent repairs

Added electronics, trailer wiring, alarm systems, or prior work near the pedal harness can introduce noise or shorts that disrupt the serial communication line.

6. PCM internal fault

A rare cause is a failed communication port inside the PCM; this should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, power, and ground have been thoroughly tested and ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for all stored codes and freeze-frame data; note whether other APP channels or bus communication codes are present.
  2. Visually inspect the accelerator pedal sensor connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, or poor grounds.
  3. Check power, ground, and data-line continuity/voltage at the sensor connector using the manufacturer wiring diagram for the "E" channel.
  4. If wiring and power/ground are correct, replace the accelerator pedal position sensor assembly and re-test communication.
  5. Clear the code and perform a test drive while monitoring live data to confirm all APP channels report correctly.
  6. Only suspect the PCM if the code returns immediately after confirmed-good sensor, wiring, and power/ground repairs.

Frequently asked

Is U0682 the same as a throttle position sensor (TPS) code?

No. U0682 is a communication fault with the accelerator pedal position sensor's "E" channel, not a range or performance fault of the throttle blade position sensor on the throttle body. They are separate components.

Do I need to replace the PCM for U0682?

Usually not. PCM failure is an uncommon cause of this lost-communication code. Most U0682 cases are fixed by repairing wiring or connectors, or by replacing the accelerator pedal position sensor assembly.

Is it safe to keep driving with U0682?

The vehicle may still move but often enters reduced-power/limp mode, which limits acceleration. It should be diagnosed promptly because unexpected loss of throttle response can be unsafe.

Why does the code say "throttle pedal" instead of "accelerator pedal"?

OBD-II standards use the terms interchangeably. The sensor is mounted on the accelerator pedal and reports pedal position to the PCM.
