U0444 is a network communication code indicating that a control module (most often the PCM) has received implausible, corrupted, or otherwise invalid data from the Body Control Module 'C' over the vehicle's communication bus (typically CAN). It does not directly identify a faulty component but rather a data-integrity problem between modules, so the underlying cause is usually wiring, connectors, power, or the BCM itself rather than the receiving computer.

1. Wiring or connector fault between BCM-C and the bus

Chafed, broken, or corroded CAN bus wiring and pin/connector damage at the BCM-C connector are the most common cause of invalid-data codes. Intermittent opens or shorts produce garbled messages that other modules flag as invalid.

2. Loose, corroded, or contaminated BCM-C connector or grounds

Poor terminal contact, water intrusion, or weak chassis grounds to the BCM can cause it to transmit inconsistent data while still appearing to be online on the network.

3. Loss of proper power or ground to BCM-C

Low battery voltage, a failing ignition feed, or a high-resistance ground can cause a module to behave erratically and emit out-of-range values, which the receiving module interprets as invalid data.

4. Internal BCM-C failure

The BCM itself can develop internal faults, especially with age, heat, or moisture exposure, leading to corrupted outgoing messages even when power and wiring are good.

5. CAN bus integrity issue (termination, topology, or interference)

Damaged termination resistors, a shorted bus wire, or heavy electrical noise from aftermarket devices can distort traffic from BCM-C and trigger this code in multiple modules.

6. Receiving module (PCM/ECM) software or internal fault

Genuine failures of the receiving module are uncommon for U-codes but can occur, particularly after improper programming or voltage events; this is the least likely cause and should be confirmed only after excluding the items above.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Perform a full system scan and record all DTCs (including non-emissions modules); look for companion U-codes that point to the same bus segment or module.
  2. Inspect the BCM-C connector, pins, and harness for bent pins, corrosion, water ingress, chafing, and aftermarket tap-ins; repair as needed before proceeding.
  3. Verify battery state of charge and load-test it, then check BCM-C power feeds and grounds for voltage drop under load.
  4. Use a lab scope or graphing scan tool to monitor CAN-H and CAN-CAN-L signals at the BCM connector for proper voltage levels, termination, and signal distortion.
  5. Command BCM outputs with a bi-directional scan tool while watching the receiving module to see if valid responses are produced; if data is still flagged invalid, the BCM is suspect.
  6. If wiring, power, and bus integrity check good, follow the manufacturer's published BCM-C functional test and reprogramming/recalibration procedure before considering module replacement.
