U0431 — Invalid Data Received From Body Control Module

U0431 means that a control module (usually the PCM or another ECU) has received data from the Body Control Module that fails validation checks such as incorrect message length, checksum, or out‑of‑range values. It is a communication fault on the vehicle’s CAN network, not a sensor or actuator failure.

5. Receiving module (PCM/ECM) communication fault

Less commonly, the PCM's CAN transceiver or related circuitry may be defective, causing it to misinterpret valid BCM data as invalid.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for all DTCs and note any related U‑codes (e.g., U0100, U0155) that may indicate broader CAN network issues.
  2. Measure BCM power (B+) and ground voltages at its connector; repair any missing or low voltage.
  3. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors linking the BCM to the CAN bus for damage, corrosion, or loose pins; perform continuity and resistance checks.
  4. Check CAN high and low bus voltages (≈2.5 V each) and termination resistance (~60 Ω) at the DLC; replace faulty resistors or repair bus wiring if needed.
  5. Use a scan tool to view live CAN data from the BCM; if data is absent or corrupted, substitute a known‑good BCM or re‑flash the BCM software to rule out internal failure.
  6. If BCM‑side tests pass, evaluate the receiving module’s CAN transceiver; replace the PCM/ECM only after confirming its communication circuit is faulty.
