U0287 — Lost Communication Transmission Fluid Pump Module

Generic OBD-II · all makesNetwork / communication

U0287 means the engine or transmission controller has lost serial-data communication with the transmission fluid pump control module. The module may have failed, lost power or ground, or its communication wiring may be open, shorted, or corroded. When this happens, the controller stores the code and may disable functions managed by that module.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty transmission fluid pump module

Internal electronics in the pump control module can fail, preventing it from responding on the network even when power and wiring are intact.

2. Wiring or connector fault in module circuits

Corroded, bent, loose, or damaged pins, plus opens or shorts in the module harness, can interrupt both power and data exchange.

3. Loss of power or ground to the module

A blown fuse, faulty relay, or poor ground connection can shut the module down and make it appear unresponsive.

4. Network bus circuit problem

A short-to-ground, short-to-power, or open in the shared CAN or LIN bus can isolate the pump module from the rest of the network.

5. PCM/TCM internal communication fault

Rare; the main controller may misinterpret bus traffic or have an internal driver failure, but this should only be considered after the module and wiring are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and note any additional U-codes or network-related codes
  2. Visually inspect the transmission fluid pump module connectors and harness for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, or fluid intrusion
  3. Check battery voltage, fuses, relays, and the module's power and ground circuits against specifications
  4. Test the communication bus integrity (voltage, resistance, and waveform) between the module and the PCM/TCM
  5. Run manufacturer-specific module self-tests or actuation tests; replace or reprogram the module if wiring and bus are verified OK
  6. Consider PCM/TCM replacement or reprogramming only after the pump module, wiring, and bus circuits have been fully verified

Frequently asked

Do I need a new PCM/TCM for U0287?

Usually no. U0287 is a communication code for the transmission fluid pump module, and the root cause is most often the module, its connectors, wiring, or power/ground. PCM/TCM failure is uncommon.

Is it safe to drive with U0287?

Short trips to a repair facility are generally acceptable, but avoid heavy loads or prolonged driving because transmission cooling or lubrication functions may be affected if the pump is not operating.

Can a generic scan tool diagnose U0287?

A generic tool can read the code, but pinpointing the cause usually requires a scan tool with manufacturer-specific network diagnostics and module actuation tests.

Does U0287 mean the fluid pump itself is bad?

Not necessarily. It means the controller cannot communicate with the pump module. The pump motor could still be fine while the module or wiring has failed.
