U0203 means the vehicle’s central network gateway or primary control module can no longer communicate with Door Control Module E over the data bus. This is a network/communication fault, not an emissions or sensor performance fault, and usually points to a wiring, connector, or module problem on the affected door circuit.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty or unpowered Door Control Module E

The door module itself may have an internal failure, or its power/ground/awake circuits may be missing, causing it to drop off the network. This is the most common root cause for a lost-communication DTC on a single door module.

2. Wiring damage in the door jamb harness

The harness that runs between the vehicle body and the affected door flexes every time the door opens and closes. Over time, wires can break, short, or chafe inside the rubber boot, interrupting power, ground, or bus communication.

3. Corroded or loose module connector

Connector terminals at the door control module or at the body-side harness can corrode, spread, or back out, creating an open or high-resistance connection that stops reliable communication.

4. Network bus circuit fault

The CAN or LIN communication lines to the module may be open, shorted to power or ground, or shorted to each other. A fault on a shared bus can also affect multiple modules if the short occurs at a splice or junction.

5. Power or ground supply problem

A blown fuse, faulty relay, broken ground strap, or corroded junction can deprive the module of the voltage or ground it needs to wake up and communicate, even if the bus wiring is intact.

6. Central gateway/body control module or PCM fault

Rarely, the module that coordinates door-bus communication may fail and falsely report loss of one door module. This should only be considered after the door module, its wiring, and its power/ground have been ruled out.

  1. Confirm the code and record all related network/communication DTCs; consult service information to identify exactly which physical door Door Control Module E represents on this vehicle.
  2. Inspect the connectors and wiring at the affected door, paying close attention to the rubber boot between the door and the body for broken, chafed, or shorted wires.
  3. Check the module’s battery voltage, ignition/awake voltage, and ground circuits with a digital multimeter while operating related controls; repair any missing supply.
  4. Test the network bus continuity and resistance between the door control module and the gateway/body control module, and check for shorts to power, ground, or between bus lines.
  5. If power, ground, and bus wiring are correct, perform module-specific self-tests or substitute/probe the door control module to verify it responds on the network.
  6. Consider the central gateway, body control module, or PCM only after the door module, harness, and power/ground circuits have been thoroughly eliminated as causes.
