U0176 is a network communication code indicating that the Restraints Control Module (also called the airbag/SRS control module, RCM, SDM, or ACM depending on the vehicle) has stopped receiving messages from Restraints System Sensor G. Sensor G is typically a satellite acceleration sensor used by the airbag system to decide when and which restraints to deploy. The code is set when that specific sensor drops off the in-vehicle communication bus for a set period of time.
The sensor itself is the most common cause. Internal electronics or the accelerometer can fail, causing it to stop transmitting on the bus.
