U0061 means the voltage on CAN bus D has fallen below the normal level, indicating the bus is being pulled low or has an open circuit. This disrupts communication between all modules that share bus D, which can cause multiple systems to malfunction or go into a safe‑mode state.

1. Wiring harness fault (short to ground or open circuit)

Damaged, chafed, or corroded CAN‑H or CAN‑L wires in the bus D harness can pull the bus low or break continuity, triggering U0061.

A defective transceiver inside a module (e.g., ABS, BCM, or body controller) can continuously drive the bus low, causing the code.

3. Loose or corroded connector/pin

Poor contact at a CAN bus D connector increases resistance or creates a short to ground, lowering bus voltage.

4. Defective module pulling bus low

A malfunctioning control module on bus D (internal fault) may draw excessive current, dragging the bus voltage below spec.

5. Power supply issue to the bus (e.g., blown fuse or weak supply)

If the voltage supplying the CAN transceivers on bus D is low, the bus may appear low even though the wires are intact.

6. PCM/ECM CAN transceiver failure

Although rare, a faulty transceiver inside the powertrain control module can cause a low bus condition; this is considered only after all wiring and module checks.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for all DTCs and note which modules are reporting U0061 to identify the affected bus.
  2. Visually inspect the CAN bus D harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or moisture.
  3. Measure continuity and resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L on bus D (should be approx. 60 Ω); check each wire to ground for shorts.
  4. With the ignition on, measure voltage on CAN_H and CAN_L relative to ground (each should be ~2.5 V).
  5. Disconnect modules on bus D one at a time; if bus voltage returns to normal when a module is unplugged, that module is suspect.
  6. If wiring and connectors are good, test or replace the suspected module’s CAN transceiver.
  7. Only after confirming wiring, connectors, and all modules are functional should the PCM/ECM be considered as a possible cause.
