U0009 — High Speed Can Communication Bus Shorted Bus

U0009 indicates that the high-speed CAN communication bus is electrically shorted, preventing modules on that network from exchanging data reliably. This is a network-level fault, not a fault with any single sensor or actuator, and it means the controller area network wiring or a connected module is pulling the bus lines out of normal voltage range.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Shorted or chafed CAN bus wiring

The most common cause is a wiring harness where CAN high or CAN low has rubbed through and shorted to ground, battery voltage, or each other. Damage often occurs near moving components, heat sources, or connector bulkheads.

2. A failed module shorting the bus internally

Any module on the high-speed CAN network can fail internally and clamp the bus lines. The shorting module is not necessarily the one setting the code, so isolation testing is required.

3. Corrosion or water intrusion at a connector or splice

Moisture entry at a bulkhead connector, splice pack, or module connector can bridge CAN high and low or short them to ground, producing a persistent bus short.

4. Damaged connector pins or a failed termination resistor circuit

Bent, pushed-out, or corroded pins can short adjacent circuits, and a damaged termination network can destabilize bus voltage, though this typically causes open or resistance faults rather than a true short.

5. PCM/ECM internal failure

An internal short inside the engine computer is possible but rare. It should only be considered after all wiring and other modules on the bus have been cleared by testing.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Perform a thorough visual inspection of CAN bus wiring, connectors, and splice packs for chafing, corrosion, moisture, and pin damage.
  2. With the key off, measure resistance between CAN high and CAN low, and from each line to ground and battery voltage, to confirm and characterize the short.
  3. Disconnect modules on the high-speed CAN network one at a time while monitoring bus resistance/communication to isolate which node is shorting the bus.
  4. Trace and repair the affected wiring or connector once the shorting segment or module is identified.
  5. Reconnect all modules, clear codes, and verify that network communication is restored and no U-codes return.
  6. If every module and harness segment is cleared by testing, only then evaluate the PCM as a last-resort cause.

Is U0009 caused by a bad PCM or ECM?

Usually not. The far more likely cause is a wiring short, corrosion, or another module on the CAN bus failing internally. Replacing the engine computer without isolating the short first often does not fix the problem.

Can I keep driving with this code?

It is not recommended. A shorted CAN bus can cause loss of communication between critical modules, leading to stalling, no-start, or unpredictable warning-light and drivability behavior.

Will replacing a sensor fix U0009?

No. U0009 is a network communication fault, not a sensor performance fault. Individual sensors do not short the CAN bus in a way that sets this code; the issue is in the bus wiring or a connected control module.

Why do I have many other U-codes along with U0009?

Because the CAN bus is shorted, multiple modules lose communication and each may log its own loss-of-communication code. The short itself is the root cause; the other U-codes are symptoms, not separate failures.
