P2843 means the transmission control module has detected a voltage above the expected range on the electrical circuit for the shift fork "D" position sensor. This sensor tells the module where the shift fork is located as it engages different gears; a "high" reading usually points to an open circuit, short to voltage, or sensor fault rather than a normal position signal.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty shift fork D position sensor

The sensor itself can fail internally, causing an open or shorted signal line so the control module sees a high voltage. This is the most common root cause for a circuit-high code.

2. Wiring or connector fault on the position circuit

An open in the signal or ground path, a short to a higher-voltage wire, corrosion, or a pushed/p damaged pin can raise the circuit voltage seen by the module.

3. Internal mechatronic or actuator assembly fault

If the position sensor is integrated into the mechatronic unit or shift actuator, internal damage or contamination can produce an out-of-range high signal.

4. Mechanical binding or damage of shift fork D

Less commonly, a bent, worn, or binding shift fork may hold the sensor at an extreme position and contribute to an abnormal circuit reading.

5. Transmission control module internal fault

A rare cause is an internal TCM/PCM problem misreading a normal sensor voltage; it should only be considered after the sensor circuit and wiring are proven good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data, then clear the code and road-test to confirm P2843 returns.
  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, or signs of short-to-voltage near the transmission.
  3. Measure sensor supply, signal, and ground voltages, plus resistance, against manufacturer specifications; compare with another shift fork sensor if available.
  4. If the circuit tests normal externally but the sensor signal is still high, evaluate the internal sensor or mechatronic unit as applicable.
  5. Consider TCM software updates or TCM replacement only if all hardware and wiring checks pass and manufacturer service information supports it.
