P2773 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a low voltage signal from the four-wheel-drive low-range switch circuit. The 4WD low switch tells the PCM when the transfer case is engaged in 4-low; a 'low' reading means the signal wire is shorted to ground, the switch is stuck closed, or the circuit has an open/short that pulls the reference voltage down.

1. Faulty 4WD low-range switch

The switch itself is the most common failure point. Internal contacts wear, stick, or fail open/closed, producing a persistent low signal to the PCM.

2. Damaged or shorted wiring harness

Chafed, pinched, or melted wires in the transfer-case harness can short the signal circuit to ground, which the PCM reads as a low input.

3. Corroded or loose connector at the switch

Moisture and road contamination at the transfer-case connector is common and can create a high-resistance or shorted path to ground.

4. Misadjusted or mechanically stuck switch/actuator

If the switch plunger does not line up with the transfer-case shift rail, it may be held in the low-signal position even when 4-low is not selected.

5. Transfer-case internal range-sensor fault

On some vehicles the 4WD low function is read by a position sensor inside the transfer case; a failed sensor can produce the same low-signal code.

6. PCM/ECM failure or software issue

Rare. The control module can only be considered after the switch, wiring, connector, and sensor have all been verified, because circuit-level codes almost never trace to the module itself.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and review freeze-frame data to see when the fault was set (4WD engaged, vehicle speed, gear).
  2. Visually inspect the transfer-case harness and connector for chafing, corrosion, moisture, or a loose pin; repair as needed.
  3. Back-probe the 4WD low switch connector and check the signal wire voltage with a multimeter, comparing key-on vs. while shifting into and out of 4-low.
  4. Test the switch itself for proper open/closed resistance in each transfer-case position per the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If wiring and switch test good, evaluate the transfer-case range sensor (where applicable) and the shift linkage or actuator alignment.
  6. Only after all of the above pass should the PCM be suspected; re-check for TSBs and confirm with a known-good module or factory scan data before replacement.
