P2742 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a signal voltage from Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor 'B' that is lower than the calibrated range. Because most TFT sensors are negative-temperature-coefficient thermistors, a 'low' circuit reading usually reports an abnormally high fluid temperature or a short/open in the sensor circuit.

1. Failed transmission fluid temperature sensor B

The thermistor element inside the sensor can drift out of range, internally short, or open, sending a constant low-voltage signal to the PCM. This is the single most common root cause for this code.

2. Wiring short to ground or open in the sensor circuit

The signal or reference-voltage wire may be rubbed through, pinched, or corroded, creating a path to ground or an open that pulls the circuit voltage below the expected threshold.

3. Poor connector or terminal condition

Water intrusion, terminal spread, or corrosion at the sensor or harness connector can increase resistance or create an intermittent short, producing a low circuit reading.

4. Internal transmission wiring or conductor-plate fault

On units where the sensor is mounted on an internal conductor plate or routed through the transmission case pass-through, internal harness damage can mimic a failed sensor.

5. PCM fault

A rare internal PCM reference-voltage or analog-input failure can set this code; it should only be considered after the sensor, harness, and connectors have been verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data; compare TFT Sensor B live-data readings with Sensor A and actual fluid temperature.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, or short-to-ground near exhaust or frame components.
  3. Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance across the specified temperature range; replace if it is outside manufacturer specifications.
  4. With the sensor disconnected, check the PCM-supplied reference voltage and ground at the harness side, and verify signal-wire continuity and isolation from ground.
  5. If the sensor and external harness test good, inspect internal transmission wiring or conductor plate as applicable.
  6. Only after all circuit and sensor checks pass should the PCM input be suspected and evaluated per service information.
