P2508 sets when the engine control module detects a higher-than-expected voltage on the circuit that supplies it with switched/ignition-on power. This usually points to a problem in the external power feed path rather than the module itself.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty or stuck PCM power relay

A relay with welded contacts or incorrect coil resistance can feed excessive or unregulated voltage to the PCM ignition-power circuit, causing the input signal to read high.

2. Short-to-voltage in the PCM power feed wiring

The wire that carries ignition-switched power to the PCM may be rubbing against a battery-positive source, raising the monitored input above the expected threshold.

3. Charging-system overvoltage

A failing voltage regulator or alternator can push system voltage above normal, which the PCM interprets as a high power-input signal.

4. Corroded or poor-quality connections

High-resistance or intermittent connections in the power distribution path can create abnormal voltage readings at the PCM connector.

5. PCM internal monitoring circuit fault

If the power feed, relay, charging system, and wiring all test normal, the PCM's internal voltage-sensing circuit may be misreading the input, but this is uncommon.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Measure battery voltage with the engine off and charging-system voltage with the engine running to rule out overcharging.
  2. Locate and inspect the PCM power relay; verify correct part number, test coil resistance, and check whether contacts are welded or arced.
  3. Trace the switched-power feed wire to the PCM, inspecting for chafing, pin damage, or evidence of a short to a higher-voltage circuit.
  4. Back-probe the PCM power-input pin with a quality digital meter and compare the reading to system voltage and manufacturer specifications.
