P2303 means the powertrain control module has detected a lower-than-expected voltage on the primary control circuit for ignition coil B. This low-voltage condition typically results from a short to ground, an internal coil fault, or a wiring problem that prevents the circuit from reaching normal operating voltage. When this happens, the coil may not fire properly and the affected cylinder can misfire.

1. Faulty ignition coil B

A broken wire, backed-out pin, or severe corrosion can prevent the circuit from developing normal voltage when the PCM attempts to operate the coil driver.

5. Faulty PCM ignition coil driver

An internal failure of the PCM’s coil driver transistor is uncommon but possible; it should only be considered after the coil, wiring, and connectors have been thoroughly tested and verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the ignition coil B connector and wiring for corrosion, terminal damage, chafing, or burn marks.
  2. Test the primary resistance of ignition coil B and, if practical, swap it with a known-good coil to determine whether the code follows the coil.
  3. With the ignition on, back-probe the coil B primary control circuit to measure voltage and identify whether the line is shorted low or open.
  4. Check continuity of the control wire between the coil connector and the PCM, and verify the wire is not shorted to ground or to other circuits.
  5. If the coil, wiring, and connectors all test satisfactorily, scope or load-test the PCM coil driver output before replacing the module.
