P2279 is set when the engine control module detects an abnormal amount of unmetered air entering the intake on bank 1. The leak creates a mismatch between the airflow measured by the mass‑air‑flow (MAF) sensor and the actual air reaching the cylinders, often producing a lean fuel mixture.   4. Monitor short‑term fuel trim (STFT) and long‑term fuel trim (LTFT) for bank 1; sustained positive trim values indicate unmetered air.
  5. Compare MAF sensor data with throttle‑position sensor (TPS) and manifold absolute pressure (MAP) readings for discrepancies.
  6. Measure intake‑manifold vacuum with a gauge; low vacuum suggests a large leak, which should then be pinpointed with a leak‑detection method.
  7. If no leak is found after these steps, verify ECM calibration and consider a functional test of the ECM (rare).
