Unmetered air entering the exhaust upstream of or around the sensor will skew NOx readings, triggering a range/performance fault.

4. Contaminated NOx sensor

Oil, coolant, or rich-fuel exhaust contamination can foul the sensor element and shift its output outside acceptable values.

5. SCR system issue affecting NOx readings (diesel applications)

Low or degraded diesel exhaust fluid, a failing DEF injector, or a saturated SCR catalyst can alter tailpipe NOx concentration and produce a range/performance code on the downstream sensor.

6. PCM or sensor control module fault

The engine controller or the NOx sensor's own control module is a comparatively rare cause. It should only be considered after wiring, the sensor, exhaust integrity, and the SCR system have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Connect a scan tool and confirm P2214 is current; record freeze frame data and check for related SCR, DEF, or sensor-heater codes that may share a root cause.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the Bank 2 NOx sensor connector and harness, looking for chafed, melted, oil-soaked, or corroded wiring and bent or backed-out pins.
  3. Inspect the exhaust system around the NOx sensor location for cracks, loose clamps, or gaskets that could allow false-air ingestion.
  4. View live NOx sensor data with the scan tool while the engine is at operating temperature; compare upstream and downstream values to manufacturer specifications and check sensor response during snap-throttle events.
  5. For diesel applications, verify diesel exhaust fluid level, quality, and dosing activity, and check for SCR catalyst efficiency codes that may explain the abnormal reading.
  6. If wiring, exhaust, and SCR system are confirmed good, test or replace the Bank 2 NOx sensor, and only after all other causes are ruled out, evaluate the sensor control module or PCM.

Is it safe to keep driving with code P2214?
