Code P2138 indicates that the engine control module has detected a voltage correlation fault between the two throttle position sensor circuits (or between the two accelerator pedal position sensor circuits). These redundant sensors are designed to output proportional voltages that track each other; when their signals diverge beyond a calibrated threshold, the ECM sets this code and typically forces a reduced-power operating mode.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data; note whether P2138 is accompanied by TPS- or APP-specific codes (e.g., P0120P0124, P2120–P2125).
  2. Visually inspect the throttle body and accelerator pedal wiring harnesses and connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  3. Using a scan tool, monitor the two TPS (or APP) voltage signals while slowly operating the throttle/pedal; they should move smoothly and maintain a fixed ratio.
  4. Check the 5 V reference voltage and ground at each sensor connector with a multimeter; verify they are within specification and stable.
  5. Perform continuity and resistance checks on each signal, reference, and ground wire between the sensor and ECM; repair any open or high-resistance circuits.
  6. If all wiring and supply circuits test good, replace the affected sensor assembly (throttle body or pedal assembly) and retest.
