This means the throttle plate is not moving to where the PCM is asking it to go, which can affect idle quality, acceleration, and overall engine operation.

1. Carbon buildup in throttle body

Carbon and oil deposits around the throttle plate and bore restrict movement, causing the plate to stick and fall outside the expected performance range. This is the most common cause on higher-mileage vehicles.

2. Failed or worn throttle body actuator/sensor assembly

The internal DC motor or throttle position sensors within the throttle body can fail electrically or mechanically, preventing accurate throttle plate control and feedback.

3. Wiring or connector issue at throttle body

Corroded, loose, or damaged pins in the throttle body electrical connector, or chafed wiring, can cause voltage drops or signal errors between the throttle body and PCM.

4. Vacuum leak or intake air leak

A significant unmetered air leak downstream of the throttle body can cause the PCM to command throttle positions outside the normal learned range as it tries to maintain idle, triggering the code.

5. Sticking throttle plate linkage / mechanical binding

Physical interference or wear in the throttle shaft or plate can prevent smooth movement, though this is less common on modern electronic throttle bodies than on older cable-operated designs.

6. PCM software or internal fault

A PCM calibration issue or rare internal driver circuit failure is possible but uncommon. This should only be considered after all throttle body, wiring, and intake components are verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Read and record all stored freeze frame data and accompanying codes, as related codes (P2101, P0121, P0221, etc.) help narrow the fault.
  2. Visually inspect the throttle body electrical connector for corrosion, bent pins, or loose fit, and check wiring for chafing or damage.
  3. Remove the intake duct and inspect the throttle body bore and plate for carbon buildup; clean if deposits are present, then clear codes and retest.
  4. With the key on and engine off, use a scan tool to command throttle plate movement and observe actual vs. commanded position for lag, sticking, or mismatch.
  5. Check for intake system vacuum leaks using smoke testing or propane method, especially if idle quality issues are present.
  6. If the throttle body, wiring, and intake are all verified good, only then investigate PCM calibration updates or internal PCM faults.
