OBD-II code P2027 means the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an abnormally high voltage signal from the evaporative emissions (EVAP) fuel vapor temperature sensor. This sensor is a thermistor that reports the temperature of fuel vapor or of the EVAP canister, and an open circuit in the sensor, its wiring, or connector is the usual reason the signal reads abnormally high.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Open or damaged sensor wiring or connector

A broken, chafed, stretched, or disconnected signal or ground wire, or corroded connector pins, is the most common cause. An open circuit lets the signal line float up to the reference voltage, producing the high reading the PCM reports.

2. Failed fuel vapor temperature sensor

The sensor is a thermistor and can fail open internally, sending its resistance to infinity. The PCM then sees the full reference voltage and sets P2027.

3. Corroded, loose, or contaminated connector at the sensor

Moisture, road salt, and oxidation at the sensor connector interrupt the circuit and produce the same high-voltage symptom as a physically broken wire.

4. Open in a shared sensor ground circuit

If the vapor temperature sensor shares a ground splice or ground point with other EVAP components, a break in that path can float the sensor signal high.

5. Signal wire shorted to a power feed or to the 5V reference

Less common, but damaged insulation on the signal wire contacting a powered circuit will hold the sensor signal high even when the sensor is good.

6. Faulty PCM input or driver

The powertrain control module is a rare cause of P2027 and should be considered only after the sensor, harness, and connectors have all been tested and verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm the code with a scan tool, record freeze-frame data, and check for any related EVAP codes that may help narrow the fault.
  2. Locate the fuel vapor temperature sensor (most often mounted on or near the EVAP charcoal canister) and perform a careful visual inspection of the harness and connector for damage, chafing, corrosion, or contamination.
  3. With the ignition on, backprobe the sensor connector and measure the signal voltage at both the sensor and the PCM end of the harness, comparing the readings to the expected range for the current fuel vapor temperature.
  4. Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance at ambient temperature, then compare to the manufacturer's specification; an open or infinite reading points to an internally failed sensor.
  5. With the sensor still disconnected, verify the presence of the 5V reference and a clean ground at the harness connector, and check the signal wire for continuity to the PCM and for shorts to power or ground.
  6. Repair or replace the actual failed component found, and clear codes; only if all of the above check out should the PCM be investigated further.
