P0756 indicates that the transmission's Shift Solenoid B is not performing as commanded, typically because it is stuck in the 'off' position or is otherwise failing to control hydraulic pressure correctly. This solenoid regulates fluid flow to one of the transmission's clutch circuits, and when it malfunctions the powertrain control module (PCM) detects a mismatch between the expected and actual gear ratio. Left unresolved, it can trigger limp-in mode and cause further transmission wear.

Scratched bores, sticking valves, or worn springs in the valve body can prevent proper fluid routing even when the solenoid itself is functional.

4. Damaged wiring, connector, or corrosion at the solenoid

Open circuits, short circuits, or poor pin contact between the PCM and the solenoid can mimic a failed solenoid by interrupting the control signal.

5. Clogged transmission filter or obstructed fluid passages

Restricted flow upstream of the solenoid can cause pressure irregularities that the PCM interprets as solenoid performance failure.

6. PCM/ECM driver fault

The internal driver circuit that energizes Shift Solenoid B can fail, but this is uncommon and should only be considered after every other possibility has been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify transmission fluid level and inspect its color and smell; replace if burnt or contaminated.
  2. Retrieve all stored and pending transmission-related codes and review freeze-frame data.
  3. Inspect the solenoid's wiring harness and connector for damage, bent pins, heat damage, or corrosion; repair as needed.
  4. Measure Shift Solenoid B resistance with a multimeter and compare it to the manufacturer's specification; test for shorts to ground or power.
  5. If electrically within spec, drop the pan and check the solenoid screen, valve body, and fluid passages for debris or wear.
  6. Only after all mechanical and wiring causes are excluded should PCM driver function be evaluated with a scan tool capable of commanding the solenoid on and off.
