P0697 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an open circuit in Reference Voltage 'C,' one of the 5-volt supply circuits the PCM uses to power certain sensors. The code is set when the PCM monitors its own reference voltage output and finds that the expected voltage is missing or significantly outside specification on that specific circuit. It is fundamentally a wiring or sensor issue, not an engine-performance problem in itself.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Open or damaged wiring in the C reference voltage circuit

A broken wire, chafed insulation, or stretched terminal in the harness supplying 5 V to the affected sensors is the most common cause. Reference voltage wires are often near hot or moving components and are vulnerable to fatigue and abrasion.

2. Disconnected, loose, or corroded sensor connector

A connector that has backed off, unseated, or has water and corrosion on the pins will produce a true open circuit. This is especially common on sensors exposed to underhood heat cycling and moisture.

3. Failed sensor with an internal open on the C reference circuit

If one of the sensors powered by Reference Voltage C fails internally open, it can pull the entire shared circuit down and trigger the code along with sensor-specific codes.

4. Corroded, bent, or backed-out pins at the PCM connector

The PCM-side connector for the C reference circuit can develop terminal tension loss or corrosion, creating an open between the driver transistor inside the PCM and the harness.

5. Damaged harness from aftermarket work, accident repair, or rodent activity

Wiring that has been spliced, routed incorrectly, or chewed can show an open only after the insulation is disturbed, producing intermittent or hard faults.

6. Internal PCM driver failure (rare)

The internal transistor that supplies Reference Voltage C can fail open. This is uncommon and should only be considered after the entire harness and every sensor on the circuit have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Identify every sensor powered by Reference Voltage C using the manufacturer wiring diagram; list them before testing so each can be disconnected in turn.
  2. Read all stored and pending codes; note any sensor codes that share the C circuit, as they help localize the open.
  3. Perform a careful visual and hands-on inspection of the C-circuit harness, looking for chafing, broken insulation, stretched terminals, heat damage, and connector pin condition.
  4. With the key on, engine off, backprobe the reference voltage at each sensor connector on the C circuit and confirm 5 V (within manufacturer spec) is present; a missing voltage at every sensor points to a PCM-side or main-harness open.
  5. Unplug sensors on the C circuit one at a time while monitoring reference voltage; if voltage returns when a specific sensor is disconnected, that sensor has an internal short or open and is the cause.
  6. If voltage is missing at the PCM connector with the harness intact, perform voltage drop and continuity tests back to the PCM terminals; only after the harness is verified should the PCM itself be suspected.
