P0685 is set when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an open in the control circuit of the ECM/PCM power relay. The code means the relay that supplies voltage to the PCM is not being commanded correctly or the wiring to the relay is interrupted. As a result, the PCM may not receive power, causing starting or drivability issues.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Connect an OBD‑II scanner, record all stored codes and freeze‑frame data, then clear the code and re‑test to see if it returns.
  2. Inspect the ECM/PCM power relay fuse and the relay itself; swap the relay with a known‑good unit if possible and monitor for a change.
  3. With a multimeter, check for battery voltage at the relay coil terminal and verify proper ground while the key is on.
  4. Perform a continuity and resistance check on the wiring harness between the PCM and the relay, looking for opens, shorts, or corrosion.
  5. If voltage and ground are present at the relay but it does not click, replace the relay. If the circuit tests fine and the code persists, proceed to the next step.
  6. As a final step, verify PCM power supply and ground directly at the PCM connector; if all other circuits are correct, suspect a PCM failure and consult manufacturer data.
