P0653 — Sensor Reference Voltage B Circuit High

P0653 indicates the PCM has detected an abnormally high voltage on its 5-volt reference circuit B, which supplies a regulated reference voltage to one or more engine sensors. When this circuit is shorted to a higher voltage source or a connected sensor fails internally, the reference voltage rises above the expected range and the PCM sets this code.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Short to voltage in reference B wiring

A chafed, pinched, or corroded wire on the 5V reference B circuit can short to battery voltage or another power feed, pulling the reference line above its normal 5-volt level. This is the most common cause.

2. Failed sensor shorting reference internally

A sensor powered by the reference B circuit may fail internally and back-feed voltage onto the reference line. Disconnecting sensors on the circuit one at a time can identify the culprit.

3. Wiring harness connector corrosion or damage

Corroded pins, bent terminals, or water intrusion in connectors along the reference B circuit can create unwanted voltage paths and cause the PCM to detect an out-of-range reference voltage.

4. PCM internal reference regulator fault

In rare cases the PCM's internal 5-volt reference regulator for circuit B may fail and output excessive voltage. This should only be considered after all wiring and sensors are verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan all codes and note any sensor codes sharing the reference B circuit, as they may point to the affected branch.
  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the 5V reference B circuit for chafing, corrosion, or melted insulation.
  3. With the key on and engine off, measure the voltage on the reference B circuit at the PCM and at each connected sensor; compare to the expected ~5 volts.
  4. If voltage is high, disconnect sensors on the reference B circuit one at a time while monitoring voltage; if voltage returns to normal when a sensor is unplugged, that sensor is likely shorting the circuit.
  5. If all sensors are disconnected and voltage remains high, perform continuity and short-to-power tests on the reference B wiring between the PCM and each connector.
  6. Only after wiring and all sensors are confirmed good should the PCM be suspected as the source of the excessive reference voltage.
