P0642 — Sensor Reference Voltage Circuit Low

P0642 means the engine control module has detected that one of its 5-volt sensor reference circuits is below the specified voltage. This 5-volt supply powers multiple sensors, so a low reading usually means something is pulling that shared circuit toward ground. The code is often accompanied by other sensor-circuit codes for devices on the same reference line.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Short to ground in the 5-volt reference wiring or connectors

Chafed, pinched, or damaged harness insulation, or corroded/bent connector pins, are the most common reason a reference circuit is pulled low.

2. Internally shorted sensor on the reference circuit

A sensor such as a MAP, TPS, APP, or pressure sensor can develop an internal short that drags the entire 5-volt reference line down.

3. Reference circuit shorted to another low-voltage circuit

Wiring repairs or harness routing errors can cause the 5-volt reference wire to touch a ground, sensor return, or other low-voltage wire.

4. Connector or splice corrosion increasing current draw

Moisture intrusion at a shared connector can create an unintended path to ground or abnormal resistance that collapses the reference voltage.

5. Failed PCM/ECM internal 5-volt reference regulator

If the wiring and all sensors on the circuit test normal and the PCM still outputs low reference voltage, the module's internal regulator may be faulty; this is genuinely uncommon.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Record all stored codes and freeze-frame data; identify which sensors share the affected 5-volt reference circuit using the correct wiring diagram.
  2. Visually inspect the harness and connectors for chafing, pin damage, corrosion, or evidence of previous repairs on the reference circuit.
  3. With the key on, measure the reference voltage at the PCM output and at each sensor; low voltage at the PCM output points toward the module or a heavy downstream short.
  4. Unplug sensors on the shared reference circuit one at a time while monitoring reference voltage; if voltage returns when a specific sensor is disconnected, that sensor is shorted.
  5. If all sensors and wiring test normal and the PCM reference output remains low, verify PCM powers and grounds before considering module replacement.
