Code P0546 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a high voltage condition in the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor circuit for bank 1, sensor 1. This sensor measures exhaust temperature before the catalytic converter or turbocharger, and a high circuit reading often points to an open circuit, short to voltage, or a failed sensor. The code sets when the signal voltage exceeds a calibrated threshold for a specified time.
The sensor itself may have an internal open circuit or short to voltage, causing a high signal return to the PCM. This is the most common cause.
Damaged, corroded, or broken wiring between the sensor and PCM can create an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a short to a reference voltage, leading to a high voltage reading.
Loose, corroded, or pushed-out terminals in the sensor connector can cause high resistance or intermittent open circuits, triggering the code.
A leak can allow cooler air to contact the sensor, causing it to read a lower temperature than actual. The PCM may interpret the resulting voltage as abnormally high if the sensor's resistance-temperature curve is inverted.
Internal PCM faults are an uncommon cause. The PCM should only be considered after all other possibilities are thoroughly ruled out.
It may be possible to drive short distances, but the vehicle could enter a reduced power mode or experience poor fuel economy. Prolonged driving with a faulty EGT sensor may lead to catalytic converter or turbocharger damage.
