Code P0514 indicates that the powertrain control module has detected a battery temperature sensor reading that is outside the expected range or does not correlate properly with other sensor data. The battery temperature sensor is typically a thermistor that helps the PCM regulate charging voltage based on battery temperature. An out-of-range signal can cause incorrect charging system behavior.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed battery temperature sensor

The thermistor sensor itself has drifted out of calibration or failed internally, producing a resistance value that does not correspond to actual battery temperature. This is the most common cause of a range/performance code for this circuit.

2. Wiring or connector damage

Corroded, bent, or loose terminals at the sensor connector, or chafed and shorted wiring between the sensor and the PCM, can alter the resistance reading and trigger a range/performance fault.

3. Sensor exposed to abnormal heat sources

If the sensor has become dislodged from its intended mounting location or is sitting against a hot component, it may report a temperature the PCM considers implausible for battery conditions.

4. Coolant intrusion or moisture in connector

Water or coolant entering the sensor connector can create a parallel resistance path, skewing the thermistor reading without setting a hard open or short code.

5. PCM failure

Internal failure of the PCM's sensor input circuit is extremely rare for this code and should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and connector have all been verified good with direct measurement.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the battery temperature sensor, its connector, and the harness routing for corrosion, damage, or dislodgement from the mounting point.
  2. Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance at the current ambient/battery temperature, then compare the value to the manufacturer's temperature-resistance chart.
  3. Verify wiring continuity and insulation integrity between the sensor connector and the PCM pins; check for shorts to ground or power.
  4. With the sensor connected, use a scan tool to compare the reported battery temperature to actual battery temperature measured with a contact or infrared thermometer.
  5. Wiggle-test the harness and connector while monitoring the sensor reading on the scan tool to identify intermittent connections.
  6. Only if the sensor, wiring, and connector all test within specification and the implausible reading persists, investigate the PCM input circuit as a last resort.
